Dear World

Duane's word of the week: hot! hot! hot! (Said in a whisper through gritted teeth and a smile while running around not touching anything hot).

This week was harder than usual only because Pastor went back to work after a week of nothing but play. We had so much fun that I forgot we would have to go back to normal eventually. It's taught me to appreciate my husband more and I try harder to be a better wife.

Duane is getting taller and taller. He's learned so many new words, including: Bus! (which he says to semi trucks as well), hot-hot-hot, and no! no! no! no! (said while shaking his head with a severe look on his face). He's getting so big that I hardly dare put the camera down, afraid I might miss something.

Pastor is dreading going back to school tomorrow, but is excited to graduate. This will happen at the end of this semester if everything goes well.

Baby #2 is causing a lot of havoc in my tummy. He's a lot more active than Duane was, or what I remember he was. Baby #2 kicks my tummy and keeps me up at night. Luckily, I love my sleep and not much keeps me from it longer than ten minutes of trying.

There are many things we need to work on. Family home evening is one of them, so is Pastor and I attending the temple more often. Going to church today made me think of those things, but there are quite a few more. Hopefully I can keep the updates coming more frequently, but we are all doing well and hope the same goes for anyone who reads this. :)

Letter From My Brother

Dear Alexandria and Canayo Family, 8.23.2009

I wrote in black to you too! Lol. I'm glad to hear that you all used Pastor's time off to it's full potential. You all did a bunch of things that whole week. You were keeping as busy as I have. I'm so jealous you watched Benjamin Button, that one looked super good. I'll have to watch that one when I get home. Oh, why would you go swimming in the Great Salt Lake? Ew!! I love swimming in dead shrimp and insects, lol jk. That's so cute Duane is infatuated with planes. You will have to tell him when he becomes a pilot, he has to take me somwhere cool! You definately will have to send me those pics. Mom as a terrorist sounds hilarious! That's so sad Pastor has to go back to school/work, but if he's working now, he'll be set-up later in life and you can relax then I guess. Oh, you think you're sad g'ma can't send me brownies, I'm distraught! I love those brownies, lol, they are the best. Today is Sunday, it's kind of more relaxed on Sundays. We had an 8k road march yesterday to the shooting range. It wouldn't have been too bad, except it was in full battle rattle and a full ruck-sack. (15-20 lbs. bullet-proof vest, helmate, eye wear, rifle, ammo vest which holds water containers. The ruck-sack is about 30-40 lbs. added on, it sucks!). So, today I've been kind of relaxed, went to church and came back to do some laundry and clean the barracks a little. This week we have rifle qualifications and our 10k road march. The good thing about being that busy is the week should go by pretty quick, right? Oh, and we are qualifying for granades. I get to throw 2 actual grenades! I hope I don't drop them! Well, I better be getting ready for bed. I hope everything back home is going well for you guys. Love you all. Miss ya. Tell everyone I love them for me.

Love,
Paul

10 Foods That Give You Energy

(I took this little bit of advice from here)

By Nathan Schiller

Reviewed by QualityHealth's Medical Advisory Board

Being tired is no fun at all. You can't concentrate at work, you exercise less, and getting out of bed takes a lot of effort. It's a miserable way to trudge through life. But did you know that having more energy may be as simple as choosing the right foods?

Overall, the key is to focus on low-glycemic foods (because they release energy slowly) that are high in complex carbohydrates and low in excess fats. Iron is also very important because it produces red blood cells that carry blood to exercising muscles. A first step is to eliminate "quick-fix" foods that contain simplex carbohydrate foods, like candy bars and soft drinks, which spike your energy level before it plunges quickly. Next, start incorporating these 10 foods into your diet.

Daily

1. Whole grains. They're high in fiber (which can help slow the breakdown and absorption of sugar) and complex carbohydrates. They also contain antioxidants similar to those in fruits and vegetables. Additionally, they reduce the risk of cancer, diabetes, and heart disease. Adults should eat 6 to 11 servings of whole grains per day. Examples include whole grain breads, pastas, and rice.

Breakfast

2. Oatmeal. According to the American Dietetic Association, oat products are some of the best sources of soluble fiber. You can combine oatmeal with raisins, honey, and yogurt for extra flavor and energy.

3. Bananas. This fruit is packed with potassium, which helps your muscles contract. One per day prevents stiffness that comes from sitting at a desk.

4. Orange Juice This drink is ideal for the morning and is extremely high in vitamin C, which helps you get the most iron out of other foods.

Meals

5. Pasta. When athletes "carbo-load" before a game, they usually eat a big plate of spaghetti. It's extremely high in complex carbohydrates and low in calories, fat, and sodium.

6. Salmon. This fish is high in protein, and its high concentration of omega-3 fats and B vitamins can boost your cardiovascular health.

7. Beans. A small, powerful vegetable packed with protein, fiber, vitamins, and minerals, beans can be used in creative ways. Add them to soups, burritos, pastas, and dip spreads. In 2005 the Department of Agriculture recommended that Americans eat three cups of beans per week.

Snack

8. Dried fruit. These high-energy, low-fat snacks are easy to pack and almost never go bad. Try a medley of apricots, figs, and raisins. However, be aware that some commercially packaged dried fruits contain sulfur dioxide, which has been shown to increase your risk of asthma.

9. Almonds. Ounce-for-ounce, this is the most nutrient-dense nut. Research has shown that adding two ounces of almonds to your daily diet increases your intake of vitamin-E and magnesium.

10. Yogurt. Quick, easy, and delicious, yogurt is available in a variety flavors. One cup of low-fat yogurt contains almost 13 grams of protein and 17 grams of carbohydrates-just what you need for great energy.

The Looking Glass Wars

This book was much better than the last. I love re-tellings as long as they are re-told with orginality and are full of adventure! The Looking Glass Wars was great for both.

Mirror Mirror

This is a book I really didn't enjoy. I read to the end with the hopes of finding it would eventually make sense, but it never did! This one gets my thumbs down, despite all the postive reviews I read about it.

Ice Cream Night!

Letter From My Brother

Dear Canayos 8*16*2009

Hey, things are going pretty good here in Kentucky. How's things in Utah? I didn't know that grandma Nerdin's roof caved in. Was that after she got the new roof on it or before? I helped de-shingle the roof, and it looked like it was in pretty rough shape when we got it down to the wood. all the brothers told her a couple of places needed replacement, but maybe she thought they were just kidding. That's good she's excited about it; and poor grandpa, lol. Hey, can you guys send me grandma Nerdin's address? I asked dad awhile ago, but haven't heard back. I'm way excited about next week, we begin our rifle shooting. We are going to be shooting for the next 2-3 weeks pretty consistently. I guess being a good shot is important in a war zone or something. I have made a bunch of friends, my best friend here is probably Ogden. He's from Utah, we flew out together, were in the same company back in Utah together, and ended up in the same platoon. There are a couple of little retarded kids that I would love to punch in the head though. I mostly just ignore them. Oh, and yes co. means company. Congrats Pastor on doing well on your finals, a whole week off, you're so lucky. Oh, the bishop at the church said you should send your e-mails in black font, said everyone is sending colored e-mails and they're running out of color ink so we should pass that info on, FYI. Tell grandma Nerdin NOT to send me any brownies, my drill sergeants would own me! After I graduate and go to my AIT, that would be a good time for brownies though. Well miss you guys! Take care back home.
